Project #10

Storyboard:

Design Process

For this project, I decided to visualize the temperature and humidity of weather in different cities. Through a simple search, people can get the information about the temperature and humidity of the city that they entered. This project refers to the Elevate Emotion and Embodiment. Data feminism teaches us to value multiple forms of knowledge, including the knowledge that comes from people as living, feeling bodies in the world. For this project I pulled data of temperature and humidity from the API because these two datas are the most suitable datas that I could find (have access to the API and load it into P5) that related to environmental issues, such as global warming. As we live in this environment, we are closely tied with the environment and it is important for us to be aware of our current situation. This is a really BIG challenge, I first started with finding the right API to use, which took me a long time because the it was really difficult to find the topic that I am interested in to began with and then the few APIs that I found it was not able to be loaded in p5, which was really frustrating. After several days of back and forth with finding and testing out the right API, I have finally found this one about names, gender, probabilities, and locations, something that I am quite interested in. I then found out that I did not know how to turn the API into the one that I needed(includes all the names that I would like to pull data out of). I almost thought about giving up and not working on it anymore since I couldn't see it going into a project. I started to watch youtube videos and tried to figure out the logic behind it and then I moved onto the visual. I decided to use positions and sizes to represent the differences of temperature and humidity in different cities and show the numbers of the temperature on the bottom of the page. I also design the moving lines effect to potentially attract more people in trying the search and let them know the difference between each city. The API that I used is here API Link

Reflection

I think this is by far the most stressful project that I have worked on other than the game. It is really stressful when finally able to find one API that is within the topic of interest after a long period of research but sadly found out that it somehow can now be called within p5 then need to give it up and try to find a new one. I think one side fact that I have learned from doing this project was to make decisions and sometimes try different ways of approaching the final result. As I mentioned, I have a really hard time finding APIs that I am interested in and when I found a few, I was not able to load them into p5, therefore, I was suggested to move one and find one that actually works first then think about the next step. The reason that I decided to do temperature and humidity was because it was one that functions and also, I think as we are living in this environment, it is important to know the current situation and understand the world that we exist in. The visual is simple and straightforward but I think it does present the idea well. Maybe in the future I will be able to learn more about coding and incorporate more functions and a more complexed visual.
