Project #7 Catch that Balloon

Concept of the game:

This game is a reflection of the insecurities towards uncertainties that formed when I was little. I remember my mom used to buy these beautiful balloons and tie them onto me so the balloons will fly behind me as I walk. I was really insured by those balloons because they were floating around in the wind and I had no idea if they would be taken away from the wind. I was so terrified that they would be blown away by the wind since it was quite uncertain what would happen. I still remember the tension that the balloons created from flying against the wind and how the wind is trying to pull it away. I did not know what to do at the time therefore, I tried to hold the balloons and hide them in my arms so that they would not be blown away. Inspired by this experience. I decided to create this game of trying to get away from the flying balloons and try to find the way out. It is also a way of trying to get rid of that insecurities and refelif.

Design Process

The maincharactor of the game is this cute dog that I created called “limo”. The original idea was to create this maze that no matter what decision that the player makes, the end result will be the same. The message for the mazz is this idea that one will not change the destiny but the destiny is there waiting for you. However, I found this too difficult and tricky to make, so I decided to make this simple game where the player will try several times to find the door of existence. There is no sign of how to exit out the game because I want to refer to our real life and how usually there is no guidance or description of where and how to get to the final destination. The setting of no guidance is also a way of allowing the player to experience a bit of my sense of insecurities towards uncertainties. Once a person enters the game, the player will try to find the way out though different attempts.

Grey Box:

Reflection

I wanted to create a game that is able to let the player experience my struggles and insecurities and send out this message: “ It would be nice that one do not have insecurities or feel drowning about uncertainty, but at the same time, it is okay to feel insecure about uncertainties. through different attempts of trying, one will eventually immerse with the emotions and get out of it. Creating the game is really hard, I had spent a LOT of time debugging and trying to make it work. I am really glad that it is finally the world. Although it is a very simple game, I do hope the message is strong and it can be sent to whoever played the game.
